WHAT THE H-E-L-L IS S-E-O?

Updated: Jan 13, 2021

We get asked this a lot. And it is understandable because it’s a pretty tough concept to try and get your head around.

Let’s start with the basics. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation. So, what does that mean? Well put super simply, it’s making a website optimal for a search engine.

And how the devil do we do that? Well, there are a few aspects of SEO...

Content

Think outside the box here. Content is a large factor in the SEO success of a website. Engagement is the key with content, and you need to create content that speaks to your audience, literally. Very often people will 'Google' a question and Google will rate your website higher if your content provides the answers. To create good content, think about who your audience is and what they want to see/hear and make sure your content is relevant to them and their needs.

Architecture.

No blueprints insight, the architecture of your website is another vital part of SEO. A good sitemap will act as the roadmap of your site to guide the search engine to the important places on your website. Your website needs to be secure and needs to have an SSL certificate. It should load quickly and be compatible with mobile devices.

Metadata on your websites’ pages are also a contributory factor of your SEO. Your website should have a page dedicated to each service you offer. You can create meta-data for that page using targeted keywords.

Off-Page SEO is the long game. A strategy based on longevity, trust and brand identity in addition to driving traffic to your website from other places.

Bounce-rate

Keep bouncing for the trampoline. Search engines can tell how often someone goes onto your website and comes straight off again. If you have a high bounce rate it will harm your search position. Keep people on your site by having relevant information and a user-friendly website that allows the users to find what they are looking for easily.

Links

Not the small character from a popular computer game but just as useful for completing a mission. High-quality links to reputable and relevant sources are what search engines are looking for here. Long gone are the days when you could plug a site full of back-links to get a higher rating on search results. In-fact search engines now penalise sites for doing just that.

Location

Where in the world are you? Your location can play a part in your SEO. Search engines will use the IP address to provide users with relevant results. This can be problematic if you want to be seen in other locations but there are ways around it to increase your SEO in those areas.

Social media

Love it or hate it, activity on social media can help to drive traffic to your website and your reputation on social media platforms will affect your SEO. Search engines are looking for quality and relevant information and engagement on social media is a contributory factor in your SEO.

In conclusion, there is no overnight fix or magic wand and in-fact by trying to cheat, you could be doing more harm than good. SEO is a long-term project where the foundations need to be laid and the bricks subsequently build up strategically and over-time to create a solid structure that is easy to find, fit for purpose and stands tall above the competition. Our advice? Invest in quality materials and knowledgeable builders 😉
